SUPERVISING THE SUBSTANCE ABUSER
Ó Carl Reddick

There is a huge difference between treating the substance abuser and supervising the substance abuser. In Corrections, both efforts deal with a mandated population that is, by definition, hostile and resistive. Too often treatment providers and Corrections personnel fail to maintain communication. This session is designed for staff from both arenas. In a fun, fast-paced format various concepts such as use, abuse, offender world view, blame syndromes, and gauging motivation are all discussed from a community safety point of view. Learn to understand the process as it is experienced in the offender and probation officer’s world.

In this workshop you will have an opportunity to learn:

*     Three fatal mistakes when interviewing a mandated client

*     How to recognize which model your agency really uses

*     Statements of willingness to change, and how to seize them

*     How to differentiate between social language and professional language

A coordinated community response to the issues of addiction and criminal behavior will be discussed. The goal is a renewed sense of what is possible locally when we actually apply what is known nationally.
