Your DVD May Not Be Defective. . . .It Might Be Dirty

During the past few years DVDs have quickly exploded into the market and many of our customers are replacing their VHS taps with DVDs. But DVD’s do not come without problems. Scratches, fingerprints, dirt, dust or smudges on the reading side of the disc will cause the disc drive to miss data as the disc is being read. Improper care and handling can cause multiple problems when playing DVDs.

The following lists some tips for keeping your DVDs in good working order. Following these tips will not guarantee your DVDs will last forever, but it will prevent them from becoming damaged unnecessarily.

DVD Care Tips

These tips are designed to help you keep your DVDs in top condition. Following these tips will not guarantee your DVDs will last forever, but will prevent them from becoming damaged unnecessarily.

Handle DVD disc carefully. To remove from the case, press the “push here” button on the hub located at the center of the disk. Using your other hand gently remove the disc by its outer edge. Never remove by prying the outer edge.

Handle discs only from the edges and the center hole. Do no touch the disc surface and do not stack discs.

Discs should be inserted with the titles and artwork facing up. Make sure the disc is properly seated inside the player before closing the drawer.

Always store the disc in its protective case and keep away from extreme heat or direct sunlight.

Always check the disc surface before playing.

Remove dirt, foreign material, fingerprints, smudges and liquids by wiping with a clean damp, lint-free, nonabrasive cloth. Do not use any abrasive solvents or cleaning solutions. Wipe disc using straight motions from the center hole to the disk to the outer edge. Do not use circular motions when cleaning.

If you encounter playing problems, remove disc from player, check to see it was properly inserted, clean as directed and try again.

GWC will not replace DVDs that are damaged due to improper care and handling.
